Management of Postpartum Haemorrhage

Muhammad Saleem Haffejee, MJ Titus

Postpartum haemorrhage is the 3rd leading cause of  maternal death in South Africa ,affecting both developed and developing worlds, mainly developing world’s due to lack of resources . South Africa as a signatory to WHO millennium development goals ,which aim to reduce maternal mortality from obstetric haemorrhage is nowhere near to achieving these goals by the year 2015

Various methods are available to treat postpartum haemorrhage like using medical and surgical means. Our district hospitals use mainly medical means to arrest haemorrhage whilst making arrangements for transfer to regional or tertiary hospitals. My study aims to establish which patients can be managed at district hospitals safely.
