Abstract

The study plans to investigate whether surrogates markers of highly active HIV infection and poor immune state exist.  These markers should correlate with a high viral load and low CD4 counts.  The makers that will be investigated in this study are calculated globulin and white cell count, both of which are obtained on routine blood testing of inpatients and outpatients.  An existing ethically approved database will be used, of patients recruited from King Edward Hopital, Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
