Abstract

Three hundred and one randomly selected elderly (>60 years) volunteers from old age

residential facilities in Ethekwini will be subjected to screening for dementia and

depression using the MMSE, GDS and SMRS and DECO. Those scoring below the cut-off

point on the MMSE (cases) as well as a sample of those scoring above the cut-off point

(non-cases), will undergo psychiatric, neurological and psychometric evaluations to

confirm the presence or absence of dementia. Blood tests and a CT scan will be

performed on those confirmed clinically to have dementia.
