Abstract

It is challenging in resource limited health facilities to diagnose TB Pleural effusion based on the golden standard- “Lights criteria”. This research aims at validating an alternate method to diagnose TB Pleural effusion. Patients presenting with a unilateral pleural effusion, will have a pleurocentesis performed. Pleural fluid total protein and LDH will be measured together with serum levels to calculate Lights criteria. In addition a dipstick measurement of pleural fluid protein content will also be measured. The proposed research aims to identify if a correlation exists between Lights criteria and dipstick measurement.
