Hepatic Tuberculosis: A Retrospective Case-Control Study in Durban, South Africa

Lilisha Gounder

Abstract

Over the past five years, approximately 10 patients have been diagnosed with hepatic TB by liver biopsy and or culture at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban.  We will review the medical records of these patients to fully describe their clinical presentation, biochemical characteristics, radiologic features and response to treatment.  We will also conduct a retrospective case-control study to compare cases of hepatic TB against matched-control patients.  Control patients will include patients with liver biopsies that were negative for TB.  The results will help us to understand the characteristics of Hepatic TB in South Africa, and to improve the overall diagnosis and management of Hepatic TB.
