Abstract

South Africa is not on target to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) with respect to the health status of children. The Child Development Index (CDI) is a tool to determine the health status of children in a holistic manner and to identify areas which need to be focused on to improve the health status of children. This research intends to develop a CDI for South

Africa and use this to determine the CDI in each province over a linear period. This will help to portray the changes within each province over time and identify interprovincial variations and relate these to underlying social determinants of health.
