Prevalence of pap smear abnormalities in women attending ARV Clinic at King Edward VIII Hospital

Abstract


         All women attending ARV clinic at King Edward VIII will be approached and educated about the benefits of cervical cancer screening.  Eligible women, irrespective of age and CD4 count ,attending ARV clinic at  King Edward Hospital  will be screened for cervical abnormalities by means of a pap smear. The cervix will be inspected after insertion of the speculum, noting presence of vulval / vaginal warts, presence of discharge, as well as cervical lesion. A pap smear will be performed and patients will be given a date to return for review with the results. Participants will be categorized according to the level of immunosuppresion (as judged by CD 4 counts), as well as whether HAART was used or not.
