A survey of corticosteroids use for severe sepsis and septic shock in South Africa

Komalan Govender, Reitze Rodseth

Corticosteroids are potentially lifesaving drugs used to modify the body’s defense mechanisms. This defense mechanism, if left unchecked, can result in severe organ dysfunction, that may lead to multiple organ failure and death. Direction as to how to use these drugs are not clear in the literature. This study aims to determine, using a questionnaire, how specialists in South Africa are using corticosteroids to treat severe sepsis and septic shock in ICU.
