Retrospective descriptive analysis of post-menopausal women with osteoporotic fractures attending Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital Menopause Clinic between January 2009 and December 2010

Kamendran Govender, JS Bagratee

This study will be retrospective in nature, involving the population of  patients in IALCH menopause clinic who are post or peri-menopausal females having sustained one or more low velocity fractures. Using these patients’ hospital information already recorded as part of their management, a data capture sheet will be completed isolating various  factors. These factors will thereafter be analysed to assess trends in their association with fracture risk. In addition, blood investigation results will be accessed to identify alakaline phosphatase levels in the various population groups. Radiological data necessary will be that of bone mineral density results, an investigation all patients in the study population would have underwent. All this information can be accessed from the hospital database without any patient interaction. There will thus be no need for any further investigations for the purpose of this study or the attainment of informed consent from individual patients, in keeping with retrospective data collection.
