Abstract

HHV8 is the main causative agent of Kaposiís Sarcoma. The seroprevalence varies greatly with reports of up to 80% of infected individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study is to determine the HHV8 seropositivity in an adult cohort of HIV positive and negative individuals. Subjects that are HHV8 seropositive will have their HHV8 viral loads quantified as well as the virus genotyped. We aim to test the hypothesis that the seroprevalence of HHV8 is higher in South African HIV-infected individuals than HIV-uninfected individuals
