True Hermaphroditism in Southern Africa

Rinus Wiersma, Sandie Thomson

Managing patients with true hermaphroditism was difficult in the 1990ís, when there was little information available on this condition. The questions raised by the management of these patients and the questions that parents of patients posed, formed the subjects of my research projects. These projects were undertaken over a span of 24-years in the Department of Paediatric Surgery, with the aim of improving the management of patients with true hermaphroditism. At the same time they formed the subject of discussions with colleagues, for lectures, presentations and subsequently articles published in leading paediatric surgical journals.
