Abstract

This project is a descriptive epidemiologic study, intended to investigate the ovarian cancer patterns in the female population seeking health care from public sector hospitals in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province.  Through retrospective data collection from folders of incident ovarian cases referred to the only two KZN provincial oncology units (Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and Greys Hospital), between 2004 and 2008, trends in ovarian cancer incidence and five year survival, patient demographics, potential risk factors, histology and stage at presentation will be investigated.  This study is expected to enhance the knowledge regarding ovarian cancer incidence, staging and treatment patterns and to eventually assess the status of cancer care for ovarian cancer patients in KwaZulu-Natal.
