Abstract

The gap between HIV cases in the community and knowledge of HIV status of individuals must be narrowed by expanding the network of HIV testing. In addition to expanding VCT outside of clinical settings, WHO recommends scale-up of HIV testing in clinical settings using the PICT approach. In South Africa, the large private general practitioner population is a ready resource for expanding the HIV testing network using the PICT approach. Using the syndromic management of STI as an indicator for PICT, this study is designed to determine if this approach will lead to increased HIV testing uptake in the community.
