Abstract


HIV-2 infected individuals are at risk of misdiagnosis and treatment failure due to HIV diagnostic testing and viral load quantification being specific for HIV-1. Resistance testing and vaccine development are also impaired. This study aims to describe the prevalence and epidemiology of HIV-2 in KwaZulu-Natal. 2123 samples will be screened for HIV-2 using HIV rapid testing and Western blots. Sequencing followed by phylogenetic analysis will be used as a confirmatory test. In vitro genotypic mutation analysis will pursue. This study is important for the prevention and control of the spread of HIV-2
