Goals and Functional Areas

The goals and functional areas of the postgraduate office:

  • Render efficient and effective service to staff, students and the general public
  • Provide administrative support to academic departments where postgraduate teaching/training is concerned
  • Function as a well co-ordinatored multi-tasking unit

Functional Areas:

  • Student Selection and Admission
  • Registration and Records HPCSA
  • Registration Research
  • Administration Examinations and
  • Graduation Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

 

MMEDS (Registrars) procedure: application

The completed application form (signed by the HOD) is submitted with the following CERTIFIED copies:

  • Identity Document
  • Degree Certificate
  • HPCSA Certificate of Registration

Hereafter:

  • The application is captured and student no created;
  • The application is placed on the agenda of the next Postgraduate Committee meeting (first Tuesday of every month);
  • Letter of acceptance (indicating registration dates) is sent to student and cc’d to the HOD;
  • Student comes in to register and have a student card made.
  • REGISTRATION MUST TAKE PLACE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS

Rules for MMEDS effective from 2007

  • Fee remission for 1st year is unconditional
  • Fee remission for 2nd year is granted on completion of a Research Methods module
  • Fee remission for 3rd year will be granted on having developed a research proposal approved by the Postgraduate Committee
  • Fee remission for 4th and subsequent years will be granted on receipt of a satisfactory progress report on the research proposal signed by the supervisor and HOD

 

MMEDSC and PHD procedure: application

The completed application form (signed by the HOD) is submitted with the following:

  • Research Proposal / Concept paper
  • Certified Identity Document
  • Certified Degree Certificate
  • Name of the proposed supervisor

Hereafter:

  • The application is captured and student no created;
  • The application is placed on the agenda of the next Postgraduate Committee meeting (first Tuesday of every month);
  • Letter of acceptance (indicating registration dates) is sent to student and cc’d to the HOD and approved supervisor;
  • Student comes in to register and have a student card made.
  • REGISTRATION MUST TAKE PLACE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS

 

Coursework programmes procedure: application

The completed application form (signed by the HOD/Academic Co-ordinator) is submitted with the following:

  • Certified Identity Document
  • Certified Degree Certificate
  • Certified Academic Record

Hereafter:

  • The application is captured and student no created;
  • The application is placed on the agenda of the next Postgraduate Committee meeting (first Tuesday of every month);
  • Letter of acceptance (indicating registration dates) is sent to student and cc’d to the HOD and approved supervisor;
  • Student comes in to register and have a student card made.
  • REGISTRATION MUST TAKE PLACE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS

 

Internationl students procedure: application

  • Completed application form is submitted with CV;
  • Application is captured and student no created;
  • Application is submitted to the relevant HOD for approval; Provisional acceptance sent to application with further applications for HPCSA, Department of Health OR SAQA;
  • Supernumeries (international registrars) are required make an application to the Foreign Workforce Management Programme (FWMP);
  • Supernumeries are also required to register with the HPCSA under the category Postgraduate Study;
  • Non-medical applicants must have a certificate of evaluation from South African Qualification Authority (SAQA);
  • Once all the above documentation has been received, the application is placed on the agenda for the next Postgraduate Committee meeting;
  • Letter of acceptance (indicating registration dates) is sent to student and cc’d to the HOD;
  • Student comes in to register and have a student card made. All international students must supply the following before registration:
  1. Proof of Medical Aid (recognised by UKZN)
  2. Study permit
  • REGISTRATION MUST TAKE PLACE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS BOTH WITH UKZN AND HPCSA
